NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

HELLO!

The biggest news on this end [that's fit to share in this forum anyway] is that 13 years after leaving Ad.com to join Videology (then TidalTV), I have stepped away from the business, leaving it in extremely capable hands and positioned for continued growth.  As such, with the support of family and friends, I'm in the middle of a sabbatical year.   The plan is to pursue hobbies and interests that I don't typically have the time for.

This is an incredible opportunity for me, and I am beyond grateful for the people who helped make it possible -- my family most of all.

About Me

I'm a Western Mass native and a 20 year veteran of the East Coast start-up space who is (among other things) trying to learn how to play the guitar.

For those who don't believe in LinkedIn (or merely want the talk track):

After three years in the Massachusetts Governor's Office I worked three years just outside of Boston with a group of early cloud pioneers (this ComputerWorld article does a good job of explaining some of the things we were up to).  Awesome company, great people -- but a casualty of the internet bubble bursting in '01.

I then worked over the next 18 years  in Baltimore with early innovators of the AdTech space at two companies: Advertising.com and Videology.  Along the way, I got to see how businesses are constructed and run, I got to build relationships across the globe, and I had a helluva time doing it.  I even got to see a small part of an FBI Task Force up close.

After two years of working to integrate and embed the Videology Operations team into Amobee (/Singtel) I decided I wanted to pursue a year-long break.  My wife supported me, and my co-workers understood, so here I am.

In addition to the usual list of home repair projects that many have, as well as interests that do not convey meaning beyond "Lists of Something" (e.g., What I've been reading / Where I've been hiking / How many fish have I failed to catch), there have also been atypical projects I wanted to share because they're more physical in nature and, well, I think they're cool.

Recent Ventures

OLD BIRD PROVISIONS
Custom Coffee Roasting for single origin coffee.  Our recent roasts have been on some higher density beans from Peru.  Next up is an Ethiopian single origin that should be a bit lighter (cupping profile HERE, if you believe in quantifying taste and/or share an abiding passion for scatter graphs.)

We work with a coffee supplier with a long history of working directly with farmers and cooperatives, and I make all efforts to meet and exceed Fair Trade guidance.

OLD BIRD DESIGN

My work here has been in piping light from LEDs through glass fiberoptic cables.  An early mobile prototype showed several limitations, mostly centering around power consumption.  Second iterations are moving in two directions: larger / less mobile pieces (where access to reliable electricity can power a variety of colors), as well as a more mature mobile solution powered by rechargable Lithium Ion batteries.

Otherwise, for an idea of what's been catching my eye these days, as well as where you can best find me:
